Small • In the Ground
Set in the heart of Capitol Hill, this historic row home serves double duty as a private residence and a neighborhood tailor shop. The front yard needed to work just as hard—welcoming customers, respecting the architectural context, and solving some very real infrastructure issues. The project began with the replacement of a failing front retaining wall that had been compromised by age and persistent rodent activity. Between the front door and the shop door sits a gravel patio with classic café chairs and a small table creating an inviting spot to pause, observe the neighborhood, or enjoy a quiet moment between fittings. Layered plantings soften the hardscape and provide a sense of privacy for the home while remaining open and approachable for passersby. Integrated into the design is a discreet refuse enclosure that neatly tucks bins out of sight, maintaining a clean and orderly storefront without sacrificing accessibility. The result is a thoughtfully balanced front garden—one that supports daily business needs, enhances curb appeal, and contributes gracefully to the Capitol Hill streetscape.
